Orthognathic Surgery improves jaw function and facial appearance. It is a treatment that reshapes the jaw to help improve their form and function by realigning facial bones. Surgery is only one part of the treatment plan. Treatment begins with orthodontic appliances placed to move and straighten the teeth, then an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon performs surgery on jaws and facial bones to align them. Then the orthodontist finishes treatment by improving the function, bite fit and appearance of teeth after surgery.
Common Jaw Alignment Problems:
- Lower Jaw Too Far Back – The chin appears weak or receding
- Open Bite (Teeth Don’t Meet) - The front teeth, both upper and lower are forced outwards and the upper and the lower jaw do not touch each other, even when the mouth is closed
- Lower Jaw Too Far Forward – The chin protrudes and the lower teeth may be forced outward or overlap the upper teeth
- Asymmetry – Uneven jaws. One side may be larger or smaller or too far forward or back
Types of Surgery to Correct Jaw Alignment Problems:
- Lower Jaw Too Far Back Bring the lower jaw forward so it is in balance with the rest of the face.
- Open Bite (Teeth Dont Meet) The jaw is repositioned to allow the mouth to close. A wedge of bone may be taken from the upper jaw, making it vertically shorter in the back part of the bite.
- Lower Jaw Too Far Forward The lower jaw is moved back to make it less prominent and the lower teeth will be positioned behind the upper teeth.
- Asymmetry Make the jaws the same length on both sides by removing a wedge of bone from the longer side of the jaw. Or one side of the upper jaw may be moved up or down to even things out vertically.
